Zusammen Fallen

Opera for 3 voices, percussion, synth, el. guitar and electronics

The year ends, the year begins. Although isolation, algorithms and artificial intelligence have long characterized our present, we still often perform rituals that are rooted in the past and community: we drive away evil spirits with fire in the air and watch flowing wax solidify in an attempt to interpret the future. But can we also decide about them? Tonight the three goddesses of fate Lachesis, Clotho and Atropos determine the fate of people in their annual ritual: they spin the thread, measure it and cut it. But what if a goddess wants to escape her own fate? Does she have this freedom?

Composer Andys Skordis has created such a musical place of contradictions for Jelena Vuksanovic’s text. His mystical sound pulsates between dynamic extremes: quiet whispers alternate with electronic, room-filling drone. The tonal ranges of the three singers span rumbling lows and jubilant highs. Driven by bass drum and gongs, flowing melismas unfold, only to be counteracted shortly afterwards by combative staccato sounds. Pulsating elements change to trance-like surfaces and bright dancing marimba movements give way to brutal, metallic sound worlds between electric guitar and synthetic organ.
